The Totes Gebirge — the ‘Dead Mountains’ — are one of Austria’s most atmospheric and least visited landscapes. A vast limestone plateau in Styria and Upper Austria, barren and bleached at the high ground, but shot through with extraordinary light. Below the plateau, deep forest valleys and turquoise lakes tell a completely different story. The name is misleading. There is nothing dead about this place.
